Now that we know the benefits of mathematics what is needed to conquer this hard to tackle and arduous subject. Answer is quite simple actually, practice, a lot of practice from early childhood. But in order to perform any task or practice any task, one requires resources. Obtaining a resource is not difficult in today’s modern world but affordable resource is definitely a rare commodity. Today education is a sector which gets very little funding from the federal government.

Step 1: Introduce the Math Skill in Real Life. I will show my son how we use this math skill in real life. I will relate the skill to everyday. For division for example, I would preset this scenario: ”You have 25 baseball cards and want to give them equally to your five best friends. How do you do it?” If I said to Cameron, ”What is 25 divided by 5?”, he would just give me a funny. Using a real world example motivates him to work for it.

The internet had endless possibilities to assist your child’s math skills. There are many websites host worksheets built into games that can test them on multiplication, fraction. Moreover, they are organized according to types of worksheets suitable for your child. Math can be challenging and exciting; it is a field wherein it there needs to be diligence and dedication. No matter how we avoid math, it is everywhere. Not all children are blessed with gifted math skills but no matter what how hard math is, there are still ways on how to help our kids to learn. It is essential that you find good resources that will make teaching effective and easier.

Now he is in the third grade and we have hit the second biggest challenge / struggle of his life; math class. This is rather ironic because my husband and I both have Master’s degree in engineering and mathematics. We have mastered very highly levels of math with relative ease. My son Cameron on the other hand, struggled to grasp the concept of multiplication. I had to help him find a way to tackle this. I thought to myself, what could I do? Then it hit me, we already developed a strategy that he has mastered to maintain his health. Why not help him develop a strategy to learn math concepts and skills? So I developed this 3 step method that changed everything.

Another problem with almost all worksheets is that they don’t prevent incorrect answers. Self-checking worksheets just let the student know they did something wrong–after the fact. I am a firm believer in the concept that, if at all possible, learning should be structured in small chunks in such a way that there is very little possibility for error. Worksheets often allow for mistakes to be made and then to be repeated many times. A mistake that gets practiced is extremely difficult to correct. This especially happens when worksheets are used as time fillers or baby sitters and the work isn’t really being supervised.

No matter what materials you choose, it is most important that you supervise your child constantly so that mistakes get caught rather than practiced. I learned this particular lesson the hard way. When my daughter was young, she did something that needed ”attention.” I no longer remember what it was that she did, but I told her to write the sentence ”I will not disobey my parents again” 50 times. I should have known better, but I didn’t check on her at the beginning and then I got busy. So, sometime later, she brought me 50 sentences of ”I will not disobey my parents again.” She had just practiced misspelling 50 times! I’m not certain that we ever really got that fixed.

When we complete these steps, he is ready to go! It has been extremely effective for Cameron. He started the school year with a 2 out of 4 as a math skill grade. His last report card just came and he is now on the 4 out of 4 level. Parents are the ideal mentors for their children. They can bring about some positive changes in their children’s lives. Five easy and useful steps are discussed below that can make your children good scorers in math. I hope it helps you too!
